Winter Notes from the Wild

The frost on the car this morning was a spectacle worthy of photography.  I was impressed with its structure and defined edges yet it also had a waywardness to it that was hard to know where to look. Black window or red frame, my car was a spectacle of hoarfrost, rime ice, filigree ice, who knows what it was! It was stunning. I felt like the car would shatter and crumble at any moment, it just looked so troubled under all that frost like a house of cards.

The dip in mercury in the last few days has been a welcome drift into December. But I noticed something today while I was driving around 7:30 am. Depending on where I was on the road, the outside temperature changed several degrees. In barely a 20 min drive, the car temp was reading anything from 19 to 23 degrees, and it wasn’t just going up with the sun. It also went down. It was a fun drive anyway, chasing numbers to see where the highs and lows might be.

Additionally, certain landscapes showed a whiter hue with more frost glazing every hard surface it could find. While others, nary a mile down the road no sparkles of white to be seen.

I have known about microclimates but I didn’t ever think about the possibility of actually driving through one. I had taken notice this fall of certain types of trees that had lost leaves either much sooner or much later than others just a few miles away. Frost is more ephemeral though…leaves stick around slightly longer.

Frost is a funny thing, and while I still don’t completely understand how and why it forms the way that it does, it can offer plenty of eye candy in a daily commute. Just don’t stick your tongue out at it!
