The quietpractice of paying attention
I’ve always been drawn to the quiet details of the natural world—the way light shifts through leaves, the patterns in a butterfly’s wings, or the arrival of a new bird in my backyard. Paying attention has always felt like a way to come home.
I grew up in a house in the forest, with no curtains on the windows. I would spend hours watching birds flit through the trees, or marvel at the way the moon would rise like a giant orange orb through the woods. I was often found outside, wandering among the trees, exploring every nook and shadow. That early curiosity planted a deep love for noticing, a sense that there is always something magical to see if you simply look.
As a child, I pressed my nose to the glass for the first snowfall, followed patterns in the leaves, and delighted in small discoveries that most people would pass by. That curiosity never fully went away; it simply evolved. One spring, a bird I’d never seen before arrived in my backyard, and I realized I had found my version of falling snow. From that moment, noticing became a practice—a way to slow down and feel fully present.
Today, I continue to follow what catches my attention, whether it’s a fleeting bird, the light changing across a meadow, or the quiet hum of life around me. I share these experiences here and through my podcast, The Flutter By Effect, hoping to offer a gentle invitation for others to reconnect with the rhythms of the world around them.
When I’m not noticing the world outside, you might find me sketching birds, sipping tea while watching the sunrise, or wandering the backyard with my family, marveling at the small things we might otherwise miss.
