Your yard can be a haven — even without a feeder. Feeder cams are having a moment. But attracting birds is about noticing what birds truly need… and remembering that some birds won’t even visit a feeder (no matter how good the selfie cam makes them look.)

  • Leave seed heads standing. That’s where they get their goodies — fall cleanup can wait until spring.
  • Garden in layers: big trees → shrubs → flowers. This mimics the habitat they’re wired for.
  • Plant bird-friendly natives: Rudbeckia, Echinacea, coral honeysuckle for hummingbirds (and so many more).
  • Provide water: a shallow dish, bird bath, or even a simple saucer works. Just remember to keep it clean!
  • Add winter fuel: berries from viburnum, winterberry, inkberry, chokeberry, elderberry, or Eastern red cedar support them through the cold months.

    And what helps them most?
    Layers.
A garden with multiple tiers — from tall canopy trees, to dense shrubs, to flowering plants — creates shelter, food, and safety. Most birds don’t eat “out in the open.” They slip into foliage, scan for danger, tuck themselves into shrubs, and wait.

No time to wait for giant trees to grow? No problem. There are some stockier shrub type plants that birds like just as well as the larger canopies of oaks or sycamores. The more important element is layers:

Places to hide.
Places to forage.
Places to nest.
Places to grab some water.
All important elements in making your place bird friendly yard! Planting stockier shrubs still creates the structure they need.

Layers are what matter.

A nest box can help too. Some birds are cavity nesters, while others build cup nests deep within shrubs. Either way, structure supports life.

Food, water, shelter, a place to raise young, wildlife-friendly practices — all part of the tapestry that turns your yard into habitat. No hanging bird feeder required.

Do I still HAVE A BIRD FEEDER? Of course I do. But it is not the only thing.
